My top 10 things to watch Thursday, Oct. 23 1. Wall Street was headed for a lower open after a rough Wednesday. Bond yields, gold, and crypto were up. Oil was lower. The White House is considering export curbs on U.S. software to China, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirmed yesterday. 2. U.S. crude prices jumped 5% this morning after the Trump administration imposed further sanctions on Russia’s biggest oil producers. The move is designed to impede Moscow’s ability to fund its war in Ukraine and pressure it into a ceasefire. 3. Tesla ‘s post-earnings call challenges lots of assumptions about what CEO Elon Musk really cares about. Not much commentary about EVs after a key federal tax credit expired last month. Lots of talk about robotaxis and robots . Piper Sandler loves Tesla more than ever. UBS says sell it. The stock dropped 4%. 4. IBM’ s hybrid cloud business mysteriously slowed , and the stock declined more than 6.5%. I don’t really understand how that could happen because it isn’t slowing down for anyone else. IBM did raise guidance, though, and AI is solid. 5. The Trump administration is considering equity stakes in quantum companies, according to The Wall Street Journal. Would quantum stakes ignite a group that had started to collapse? Could this be a short cover day? D-Wave Quantum was one of the standouts this morning, surging nearly 13%. 6. Club stock Honeywell is up 4% this morning after the company reported a beat-and-raise quarter. Next week, Honeywell is set to complete its spin-off of Solstic Advanced Materials. Late next year, the company plans to split its automation and aerospace units into separate companies. 7. Industrial conglomerate Dover ‘s third-quarter profit came in above expectations, though revenues were a tad light. It raised its full-year EPS guidance, and bookings growth of 8% accelerated from last quarter. This is a very cheap stock left behind by the Street. Shares of the Club name rose 2.5%. 8. Club names GE Vernova and Danaher got post-earnings price target bumps. Barclays likes GE Vernova’s Prolec deal . GE Vernova shares were down big early yesterday and pared losses by the close. We wrote about how the OpenAI halo may have given shares a lift. Wells Fargo sees 2026 high-single-digit earnings growth for Danaher after solid results . 9. Citi analysts raised their price target on credit card issuer Capital One to $290 from $275. The analysts were encouraged by its credit quality. It was fantastic. Now, the Club stock is going to remake itself with the integration of its Discover acquisition. 10. Shares of American Airlines rose 6% after the carrier’s rosy full-year forecast . However, quarterly revenue per seat mile was down, and cost per seat mile was up. Southwest stock was modestly lower after the airline reported a surprise profit and expects a record for current quarter sales.
